First Snow

Had to go out and get some pics of the first snow for the winter season. The snow is beautiful, but it's not fun when the power goes out. Thank You to all the linemen that brave the wind and the cold to get the power back on.

Downtown Lights

Downtown Saginaw has changed a lot since I was a kid, one thing that hasn’t changed is the beauty of the Christmas lights along Genesee.

Illumination of Holy Family

Christmas is such a great time to get some photos of our beautiful Churches in Saginaw. This is Holy Family Church on Washington Ave. Thankfully the lights were there to illuminate the front of the church and also the rain that was falling on it. Yes, I was out in the rain taking photos of churches, pretty soon I will be out in the snow taking photos of churches.

Bridge Love

I don’t know if Scott still hearts Melissa, but I still love living here in Saginaw. This is the train bridge going over the Tittabawassee River in Saginaw Township. This bridge would be great for a Rail Trail but I think the railroad still uses it.

Conquering The Blue Skies

The clouds are coming in, conquering the blue skies in this photo of the park on west Michigan. The leaves are gone on the tree and the picnic table is empty so I guess that means winter is approaching. Looking forward to getting some great photos of the white fluffy stuff in Pure Saginaw.

Christmas at City Hall

Saginaw's city hall always looks beautiful for Chritmas. Be sure to view them after you drive by the water plant. You know you are gonna check out the lights this year at the water plant.

Saginaw's Savannah

It was a clear morning in Saginaw and I wanted to get a photo of the sunrise. I decided to try Crow Island, and I was not disappointed. This photo was taken along M13 near the Zilwaukee Bridge. It kinda reminds me of the sun coming up over the Savannah behind an Acacia tree. I guess Crow Island is Saginaw’s Savannah.

Trains And Trees

Nothing says Christmas time like an electric train going around a Christmas tree. I was in Old Town Saginaw and I couldn’t resist getting a photo of the window display of Brasseur Electric Trains.

The Lights Are On In Saginaw

As a kid growing up in Saginaw, I always thought the Christmas lights at the water plant were amazing, now as a 41 year old adult, I still think they are amazing. There are so many great Christmas light displays in Saginaw that I will have no problem finding photos of Saginaw’s Christmas spirit.

Tittabawassee Train Bridge

This time of year, when the leaves are gone and the sun is setting early, it’s difficult to find locations to photograph that are not depressing. It won’t be long and the Christmas lights will be illuminated and I will have fantastic lighting displays to photograph, but for now, I have to work with cold cloudy and gloomy days.  Whenever it’s cloudy, and kinda drab out I like to photograph railroad stuff, I think because railroads go back to a period in time when we think of old black and white photos so we don’t think of colorful landscapes so much. I took this photo of the bridge over the Tittabawassee River near the park on West Michigan.

The Great Southwest

This photo was taken on a recent walk down the trails at Ringwood Forest near St Charles. This is beautiful park with the Bad River flowing through the center of it. If you’re looking for a place to hike in the southwest corner of Saginaw County, you need to check out Ringwood Forest.

Breakfast At Green Point

I thought for opening day of hunting season in Michigan I would go out and shoot some deer not with a gun but with my 400mm Canon. My favorite place to find deer is not way up north but right in the city of Saginaw. I dropped the kids off for school and headed over to the Green Point Nature Center in Saginaw’s south end along the Tittabawassee River. Hiking thru the trails I came across four does eating breakfast, and they were kind enough to let me join them for a while.

Moon Over Saginaw

When I turned out the light to go to bed last night, there was this beautiful light glowing in the window. I looked out and seen a bright clear moon, so I grabbed my camera, went out on my deck and took this photo. Is the moon part of Saginaw? I don’t know but I was in Saginaw when I took the photo so I guess that counts for something. Sometimes we just need to look out the window into our own backyard to see something that inspires us.

My Favorite Park

I think my favorite park in all of Saginaw County has to be Randall Wickes Park on McCarty Rd. in Saginaw Township. Its right down the road from me and it has everything you could want in a park. A beautiful pond to walk around and hiking trails to walk through, it even has a new playscape for the kids to play on. This a great park to take your dog for a walk or get your training in for your upcoming marathon. (if you’re crazy enough to do that sort of thing). For me it’s my favorite place to take my camera and get some gorgeous photos of Pure Saginaw.

A Sunny Place To Sit

It was a cool but clear Saturday morning in November and I was out in Shields. I stopped by Roethke Park and took a walk around the pond. I saw the sun illuminating this bench and I captured this photo. It got me thinking about the name of the park, and I found out it was named after Carl L. Roethke brother of Poet Theodore Roethke a Pulitzer Prize winning poet from Saginaw. I found this line in one of his poems. “A ripple widening from a single stone, Winding around the waters of the world”. I wished I had thrown a stone into the water to create some ripples in the photo, but I think he is referring to us being the stone. I don’t think I will ever get poetry.

The Start of my Journey

I recently posted a photo I took of the Potter Street Train Station on facebook and many people asked me what building was in the photo. Although the Train Station is old and a little beat up it’s still standing and is a huge part of Saginaw’s history and I was surprised that many people did know what it was. Saginaw has a great history and is a wonderful place to live. I am tired of seeing my town on the top of some list of crappy cities, when I know this is still a great place to live. We have beautiful parks, rivers, architecture, and wildlife and I want to showcase the good in this area. I guess this is the beginning of my journey and I don’t know where this project will take me but I hope to change people’s perception of the Saginaw Valley area thru the photos I create. I can't think of a better place to start a journey then at a train station where my great-grandparents came into Saginaw many years ago.
